THERAPY FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

Symptoms of panic attack

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is a normal response to stress and can be helpful in some situations. It can alert us to danger, help us focus, or motivate us to take action. However, when feelings of anxiety become overwhelming, persistent, and interfere with daily life, it may be an indication of an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. These disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of worry, nervousness, or dread that are difficult to control. For a clinical diagnosis, these symptoms generally occur more days than not for at least six months. People living with anxiety disorders often experience difficulty functioning in various areas of life, including their relationships, job performance, and ability to engage socially or complete routine tasks.

Anxiety can manifest both emotionally and physically. Individuals may notice symptoms that range from subtle uneasiness to full-blown panic attacks. The condition can cause ongoing distress and hinder a person’s overall well-being.

Common Signs of Anxiety Include:

♦️ Persistent nervousness or restlessness
♦️ Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
♦️ Sweating without physical exertion
♦️ Fast or shallow breathing (hyperventilation)
♦️ Feeling overwhelmed, out of control, or sensing impending doom
♦️ Difficulty concentrating or finding your mind going blank
♦️ Trouble falling or staying asleep
♦️ Irritability or edginess
♦️ Difficulty controlling or stopping worry

Anxiety disorders are treatable, and many individuals find relief through therapy, lifestyle changes, medication, or a combination of these methods. At our practice, we focus on helping clients identify the underlying sources of anxiety, develop practical coping strategies, and find ways to reduce the frequency and intensity of symptoms. We believe that managing anxiety allows individuals to reclaim a sense of calm and confidence, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.

Types of Anxiety Disorders (include but are not limited to):

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder      (GAD): This condition is marked by excessive worry about various topics—such as work, health, finances, or family—that is difficult to control and occurs more days than not. Individuals often report feeling tense, fatigued, or irritable and may have trouble sleeping or concentrating.

  • Panic Disorder: This disorder involves recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden episodes of intense fear.      Physical symptoms may include a racing heart, shortness of breath,      dizziness, and chest pain. Panic disorder can lead to a fear of future attacks, sometimes causing people to avoid certain places or situations.

  • Agoraphobia: People with agoraphobia fear situations where escape might be difficult or help wouldn’t be available in the event of a panic attack or other intense symptoms. This can lead to avoidance of crowded places, public transportation, or even leaving the house.

  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Also known as social phobia,      this involves a deep fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated in social situations. Individuals may avoid speaking in public, attending social gatherings, or engaging in conversations—even with familiar people.

  • Separation Anxiety Disorder: Though often associated with children, this condition can affect adults as well. It involves excessive fear or anxiety about being separated from attachment figures, such as a parent, partner, or child.

Depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad or going through a rough patch. It is a serious mental health condition that affects how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities. Depression can drain an individual’s energy, motivation, and sense of hope, making even small tasks feel exhausting or insurmountable.

People experiencing depression often find it hard to enjoy life the way they once did. They may isolate themselves, lose interest in hobbies or relationships, and struggle with self-worth. It’s important to know that depression is not a sign of weakness or a character flaw—it is a medical condition that can be treated and managed.

Common Signs of Depression Include:

♦️ Ongoing feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
♦️ Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
♦️ Fatigue or decreased energy nearly every day
♦️ Changes in appetite—either overeating or undereating
♦️ Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or self-blame
♦️ Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
♦️ Thoughts of death or suicide

Like anxiety, depression can have a profound impact on every area of a person’s life. It can affect work performance, family dynamics, and physical health. Left untreated, symptoms often worsen over time. However, depression is treatable. Therapy, medication, support groups, and lifestyle changes can all play a vital role in recovery.

In our work with individuals struggling with depression, we aim to create a supportive environment where they feel seen, heard, and validated. We work together to identify root causes, shift harmful thought patterns, and rebuild a sense of self-worth and resilience.
