Autism

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism is a disorder that affects people in different ways and to varying degrees. It can appear as early as 18 months of age. Individuals with Autism have trouble communicating and understanding what other people think and feel. People with Autism learn differently than others. They have trouble with verbal and non-verbal communication. There is no cure for Autism but early treatment can make a difference in a child's life.

Signs of Autism:

♦ Does not make eye contact.

♦ Repeating behaviors over and over, like repeating words or phrases, rocking back and forth, or fidgeting with objects.

♦ Does not want to be held or cuddled.

♦ Trouble adapting to changes in routine.

♦ Baby doesn't babble by 12 months of age.

At Lighthouse Counseling Services, we do not conduct formal assessments of autism. Instead, through AutPlay therapy, we offer services designed to help children with autism improve their communication skills while also assisting parents in navigating the complexities of autism. Our focus is on providing support and strategies that empower families to thrive.

AutPlay Therapy is a play therapy approach specifically designed for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental challenges. Developed by Dr. Robert Jason Grant, this therapeutic model combines elements of traditional play therapy with a focus on addressing the unique needs of children on the autism spectrum.

 Key Components of AutPlay Therapy:

  1. Play-Based Approach: AutPlay utilizes play as a primary medium for communication and expression. This is particularly effective for children who may struggle with verbal communication.
  2. Parental Involvement: The therapy often involves parents and caregivers, helping them learn strategies to support their child's development and emotional regulation.
  3. Focus on Social Skills: AutPlay aims to enhance social skills, emotional regulation, and relationship-building by using structured play activities that encourage interaction and cooperation.
  4. Individualized Treatment: Each session is tailored to meet the specific needs of the child, taking into account their interests, strengths, and challenges.
  5. Integration of Other Modalities: AutPlay Therapy can incorporate techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and sensory integration to address a broad range of issues.

Goals of AutPlay Therapy:

  • Improve social skills and interactions
  • Enhance emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Build self-esteem and confidence
  • Foster positive relationships with peers and family members

Overall, AutPlay Therapy provides a supportive and engaging framework for children with ASD, facilitating their growth and development in a nurturing environment. At Lighthouse Counseling Services, our play therapists are supervised by a Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor (Laura da Silva) who is certified in Autplay.
